Darkhaven: main characters
FLORENTYN NIGHTSHADE is the current overlord of Darkhaven. He has two grown-up children: MYRREN, his son by his first wife (also of Nightshade blood), and AYLA, his daughter by his second wife (a woman from the city). Full-blood Myrren was born without the family gift, and as a result has struggled to find acceptance from his father. Half-blood Ayla is able to Change, but the creature she becomes is a hybrid form that hasn’t been seen before.
Florentyn’s first wife died in childbirth, while his second wife died in an accident under the care of TOMAS CARAWAY, a young Helmsman. As a result, Caraway was thrown out of the Helm and is now living a guilt-ridden and frequently ale-soaked life in the lower rings of the city. The current captain of the Helm is OWEN TRAVERS, a man who is devoted to the Nightshade line and will obey Florentyn, whom he considers to be the last true Changer, at all costs.
Other key characters are SERENNA, a priestess in one of the sixth-ring temples whose keen sense of justice leads her to become embroiled in the Nightshade family’s problems; ELISSE, a girl from the country who looks suspiciously like a Nightshade in colouring; and NAEVE SORROW, a notorious mercenary who will carry out any task, no matter how dangerous – as long as the price is right.
