The elemental jewels and their role in Endarion

The country of Castle Realm, at the centre of Endarion, is known throughout the continent for its elemental jewels. There are three of them: the Sapphire (with power over water), the Emerald (with power over earth) and the Diamond (with power over air). When Castle Realm was founded, a castle was built for each of the jewels that would support and enhance its power. Thus the Stone Citadel is located beside the sea to the east, the Oaken Keep is amid woodland to the south and the Glass Tower is in the mountains to the west.

An astute observer may notice that there is also a ruined castle to the north of Castle Realm. Some say this was once the Iron Fortress and housed a fourth elemental jewel, the Ruby. However, this is not widely known or believed.

When the castles were first built and the elemental jewels installed, the idea was for them all to work together to control the elements for the good of the country, and indeed the entire continent. Yet over time (some say after the loss of the Ruby in a great war that raged several hundred years ago) the rulers of the three castles have become increasingly distrustful of each other. Now Castle Realm is divided into three rigidly controlled sectors, and each jewel is used solely for the benefit of its own people.
