The Isles
Governance
The only hierarchal system in the Isles is found on Ilemane, the largest island, where there are enough people to make it worthwhile. The Islanders of Ilemane, as distinguished from Islanders in general, are known collectively as the Bird People; this is due to their ability to fly short distances using carefully constructed wings (much like a modern hang-glider). They are divided into family-based groups known as Flights, each of which has a Head (leader and spokesman), Wings and Wingleaders, Talons and so on. Laws and decisions are made and applied by the Convocation of Heads, ensuring every Flight has a say in matters, and a certain proportion of the vote is required to be in favour for a motion to be carried.
Currency
The Antic system is confined to the Isles, but is the main currency used on the island of Ilemane. It is as follows:
1 turtle = 8 blackfish
1 spinecat = 5 turtles
1 tallon = 3 spinecats
The coins are named after the animals inscribed upon them. A blackfish is small, round and black; a turtle is triangular and red; a spinecat is oblong and silver; a tallon is large, round and golden.
