Adventures in Publishing, vol. 2

I got quite excited earlier this week. I was browsing Amazon, and decided to search for my book title (which, let's be honest, I've done sporadically ever since it was first picked up by Voyager) ... and lo and behold, there it was! No cover art as yet, but all the same: my book is now a real book. You can preorder it on Amazon.* I'm not just dreaming this whole thing.

It was quite a significant moment for me - perhaps more significant than it should have been. My first impulse was to send the link to family, friends, casual acquaintances, the postman, that woman with a dachshund who I've seen around the neighbourhood but never spoken to, and say Look! My book is on Amazon! I'm a REAL author! Here's my US author page! And here's the one for the UK! And France! And Germany! And Japan!

(Yes, I subtly slipped my author page links in there for you to check out. Cunning, huh? Hint: they are all pretty much the same, although the US site has extra cool stuff.)

I guess this means so much to me because I've only really ever had one dream, and that's to be a published author. So seeing my own book on Amazon is like seeing my newborn baby for the first time. OK, I'm exaggerating. There's no intense physical exhaustion. But other than that, it's exactly the same.**

And, of course, these pinch-me moments are only going to keep happening. When I get to see my cover art. When the book is released. When I get my first one-star review. What's great about the book world these days is that all authors have these moments in common, whether we're traditionally published or self published. Small or large. Digital or print. Many of my author friends have been through this process already, and now I get to find out what it's like.

Turns out, it's great. But then, I always thought it would be.

If you missed my first volume of Adventures in Publishing, you can catch it here.

* And, indeed, should ;-)
** Including the sheer, overwhelming terror that it's all going to go horribly wrong.

It's so cool that your first spotting your book on Amazon was such a nice experience. It's when it starts to become real, you know? And then when they finally get around to adding the cover? You're practically gibbering. That's gonna be a great experience. I can't wait for that for you.

(mine was.... they put my real name on it, which was met with sheer horror. Luckily, I hadn't shared my title with anybody so they wouldn't know to look for it)

Eek! Yeah, if those three little initials hadn't been there, I might have reacted rather differently. I certainly wouldn't have shared the link with the dachshund lady :-D

Well, don't leave us in suspense, woman. What did she think???

It was hard to tell. But the dachshund seemed to like it.

Fantastic stuff. It is amazing when suddenly, you're the other side, and your book is on sale and you're holding a copy of the paperback and trying not to wee by mistake because you're so excited.

Cheers

MTM

Ah, handy tip. I'll make sure to empty my bladder before I'm given a copy of Darkhaven to hold for the first time ;-)
